Increasing Self-Esteem

Have you ever been around someone who just doesn’t listen to you?

Isn’t it annoying?

Do you listen to yourself?

If the answer is no, your self-esteem may be at risk.

Self-esteem is your sense of your value. For many of us, self-esteem is measured by how much we do. But measuring ourselves based on someone else’s approval is external validation – which you can’t always control.

So, then you spend an enormous amount of time and energy trying to influence what other people think of you in the hopes that you’ll finally feel good enough. But you never do.

Trying to control what other people think is exhausting and never works!

No matter how hard you knock yourself out trying to please everyone and give them what they need, there will always be someone, somewhere, who won’t approve of you. Then what? Who gives you what YOU need?

Does your self-esteem plummet when you scroll through social media?

You are not alone!

It’s easy to get caught comparing how you feel on the inside with the perfectly edited photos you see on social media. Trust me – my clients may look perfect on the outside but are struggling with their self-esteem on the inside, just like you! Often they feel guilty for hiding their true feelings or circumstances on social media posts. The false facades make them feel disconnected, lonely, and like an imposter.

When you always put the needs of others before your own, you are not listening to yourself. That’s being disrespectful to YOU!

Building self-esteem means giving yourself space to listen and acknowledge your thoughts and feelings. Every time you disown your feelings, you ignore the message they give you about what you need. You are saying to yourself, “I don’t count. I’m not important. I don’t matter.” But you DO!

Holistic Counseling will teach you how to recognize and validate your inner thoughts and feelings so that you can get your needs met.

In our sessions, I’ll help you use a combination of deep breathing techniques, meditation, and visualization to help you cope with stress and soothe yourself.

We’ll also utilize somatic awareness and Gestalt techniques, meditation, and IFS (Internal Family Systems). These techniques will teach you how to pay attention to the world inside of you, become aware of what you think and feel, recognize the ways you interrupt your ability to get your needs met, and get caught in people-pleasing.

One great way to start paying attention to what you think and feel is writing in a journal. Since a journal is private, it’s a safe way to express yourself without fear of judgment and helps you get clarity and insight about what’s holding you back. Visit My Approaches to learn more.
